leaking check valves Author: raybowman (OH)

I have a 3/4 HP submersible pump lifting water in an 1 1/4 pipe about 10 feet before connecting to the underground pipe to the public storm system. I recently noticed that after the pump shut off, I could hear the water running back down into the sump. I assumed the check valve (12" from the pump) couldn't handle the weight of
the about 9' lift when it shout off so I installed a second check valve about 4' above the first. It didn't seem to correct the problem. Because of battery back up pump and radon sealed cover, I cannot reposition the oumnp differently. The pump keeps recycling the same water..about every 6-7 minutes.Any suggestions?

A check valve does NOT leak because it "cannot handle the pressure of the water", and if a second one does the same thing, you may be trying to fix the wrong problem.

Correct, the higher the lift, the more pressure forcing the check valve closed.

Maybe it's new water entering the sump and all is working correctly?

Your pump may be sucking sand and rocks and it is getting lodged on the sealing edge of the check valve, preventing a good seal. Is the pump set up on a brick or something to keep it from sucking out dirt?

it is possible that your float has come out of adjustment. when the pump shuts off the water below the check valve will flow back to the sump. if the float is not adjusted properly this could be enough water to start the cycle over again. another issue could be water from an unknown source entering the sump (from ground water or a water leak) either way, opening the sump and physically viewing the situation should lead to a proper resolution.

quote; when the pump shuts off the water below the check valve will flow back to the sump.

That will only happen if the discharge pipe has a 'vent hole" drilled in it which few sump pumps do.

Pump check valve or pipe leaking.

Looks like every ten years or so I find myself on this forum asking for help. A decade ago it was the septic, drain pipe. Now we are dealing with what I suspect is a failed check valve or pipe in the well. Having the capability of hearing mouse fart has its pros and cons, I hear everything. When the well pump went off more than usual despite no water being used and the wife acknowledged the laundry was NOT running, I knew we had a problem. After a check of all the faucets and pipes revealed no leaks, I pretty much arrived at the conclusion that this in a problem on the inlet side, pump, pipe and check valve.

Looking at the documentation the previous owners left us from the well install isn't very comforting. The pump is 135' down. Looking at the cap of the well, hhmm, how the hell am I even going to be able to take this thing off? So, before I do anything I'll later regret, I figured I'd come on here and seek out some advice from you guys. Having been put in back in , what is the likelihood of the pipe being galvanized vs polyethelene?? I have called a local professional and am currently awaiting a call back. Any advice you all have is welcomed. I've shut the breaker off in the meantime.
