Can you add a string to a bucket hat?
Add a Drawstring to Reversible Bucket Hat
For more information, please visit Hengxing.
I enjoy creating reversible bucket hats for the children in my life. This delightful hat is crafted from an Oliver + S pattern that can be completed in under a day. I typically choose a vibrant print for one side and a more subdued print for the other side, allowing kids to mix and match their styles. As we are a family that loves boating, these hats serve as our sailing gear, so it's essential that they have straps to prevent them from getting blown away by the wind. This guide demonstrates how to incorporate a drawstring into the basic reversible bucket hat effectively.
Crafting the Reversible Bucket Hat
Begin by making a charming hat using the Oliver + S Reversible Bucket Hat pattern, which is straightforward and easy to follow. I adhered closely to the pattern instructions, however, instead of using sew-in interfacing, I opted for fusible interfacing since it was available. If you are new to the wonderful Oliver + S patterns, this is a fantastic one to start with. Please note: This type of drawstring is not suitable for infants but works exceptionally well for toddlers and older children.
Supplies Needed for the Project
- Oliver + S Reversible Bucket Hat pattern (1)
- Dritz Large Eyelets, 1/4" size (2)
- Dritz Eyelet Tool for 1/4" eyelets
- Hammer and a hammer-safe surface
- Dritz Cord Stops (2)
- Drawstring Cord, 1/4" wide and 42" long
- Pen and Small Scissors
Instructions for Eyelets
- The eyelet pliers tool is not suitable for this project due to the distance of the eyelets from the edge. Instead, use the eyelet anvil tool.
- Mark the eyelet placement by tracing inside the eyelet along each side seam.
- Using small scissors, carefully cut the hole.
- Insert the deep half of the eyelet from the underside into the hole.
- Place the shallow half of the eyelet over the center of the eyelet top on the top side.
- Position the eyelet top on the anvil from the underside.
- Insert the tool into the eyelet center on the top side and gently hammer. The center of the eyelet will split to secure it in place.
Instructions for the Drawstring
- You can purchase a 1/4" drawstring cord or create your own using 1/4" bias tape like I did.
- Cut the drawstring cord to 42" long.
- Fold the cord in half and push the folded end through a cord stop. I recommend using sewing tweezers, a stiletto, or another thin, stiff object to assist with this process.
- To prevent the cord from pulling back through the cord stop, tie a single knot in the folded end.
- On the top side of the hat, thread the cut ends of the cord through the eyelets.
- Insert both cut ends of the cord through another cord stop.
- Finally, tie a knot in the cut ends to prevent them from slipping back through the cord stop.
Completion!
You have successfully added a functional drawstring that works on both sides of the reversible bucket hat. This thoughtful gift will be appreciated by both young children and their parents alike!

What Is A Bucket Hat With A String?
A bucket hat with a string resembles a typical bucket hat but includes a 360-degree brim and a drawstring that can be easily adjusted around your face. Typically made from lightweight materials like cotton or polyester, these hats have a relaxed fit.
At SA, we prioritize quality, utilizing 100% polyester moisture-wicking performance fabric to guarantee maximum comfort while enjoying the outdoors. We're passionate about providing you with the best outdoor accessories and gear for your adventures.
What’s The Difference Between Bucket Hat With String And Normal Bucket Hat?
The distinction is obvious: standard bucket hats lack a string, while those with strings feature a drawstring that can be tightened or loosened around the face. This addition ensures that the hat remains secure even in breezy conditions. If you've ever had to chase after a hat on a windy day, you know how annoying it can be to retrieve a flying hat without a string. With a bucket hat featuring a string, you can keep your hat in place simply by tightening it.
Another key difference is that bucket hats with strings can be hung or stored easily. Meanwhile, traditional bucket hats don't offer this convenience, making storage a bit trickier.
Both styles, however, serve well for outdoor activities such as fishing, hiking, and camping, as well as everyday wear. The primary difference between the two is, once again, the presence of that handy string!
The Purpose And Benefits Of Using A Bucket Hat With A String
Using a bucket hat with a string helps shield your head and face from sun and other elements. Lightweight and comfortable, they're perfect for any outdoor activity. The string securely holds the hat in place even when the wind picks up, while also providing a touch of style. Moreover, bucket hats with strings offer several benefits:
Sun Protection
The brim of a bucket hat keeps harmful UV rays off your face, ears, and neck, minimizing the chances of sunburns and skin damage. Pairing a bucket hat with sunglasses provides an additional layer of defense against the sun's harmful rays.
Versatility
Bucket hats with strings combine style with function. Their adjustable strings allow for a proper fit while keeping the hat in place. Additionally, the hats can add a pop of color to enhance your outfit.
Convenience
Unlike regular bucket hats, those with strings can be secured around the chin or neck, eliminating worries about the hat falling off. The string also facilitates easy removal and wearing without needing to take the whole hat off.
Comfort
Bucket hats equipped with strings offer incredible comfort. If made with moisture-wicking materials like our bucket hats at SA, you can trust they will keep sweat at bay while ensuring your utmost comfort. The strings, generally elastic, are also designed to be soft and non-irritating, effectively providing an additional shield against sunlight.
Recommended Uses for Bucket Hat With String
Bucket hats equipped with strings are perfect for outdoor sports like fishing, hiking, and camping, as well as more laid-back activities like beach trips or picnics. They're also fantastic for outdoor concerts and festivals, ensuring your head remains cool and sheltered from the sun.
Thanks to the adjustable string, you won't have to worry about your hat blowing away or slipping off your head. Additionally, this design is ideal for individuals who want to keep their hair out of their faces during activities. Maintenance And Care Of Bucket Hats With String
Proper maintenance ensures your bucket hat with string looks its best and lasts a long time. Remember to care for the drawstring as well!
Handwashing
While some bucket hats are machine washable, we suggest hand washing for the best results. Start by removing any dirt or debris. Next, immerse the hat in warm water with mild detergent for 10-15 minutes. Gently agitate the hat to cleanse further, then rinse with clean water and let it air dry. Avoid using a washing machine or dryer to prevent damage.
Spot Cleaning
Spot cleaning involves using a damp cloth to carefully lift dirt and grime from your bucket hat with string. It's crucial not to use harsh chemicals, as they can damage the fabric. Start with a cloth lightly moistened with warm water and mild detergent, and gently rub the surface in a circular motion to remove debris. Avoid hard scrubbing to prevent harming the fabric or stitching. After cleaning, rinse the cloth and repeat as needed, allowing your hat to air dry completely afterward.
Air Drying
Air drying helps keep your bucket hat with string in top condition. Remove any surface dirt, then hang the hat upside down in a well-ventilated area, avoiding direct sunlight and heat sources that may fade or shrink the fabric. Allow the hat to dry completely before storing in a cool, dry location away from sunlight.
Storage
Always store your bucket hat with string in a cool, dry location, shielded from direct sunlight. Ensure you store it in a way that won't damage the string, either by folding it carefully or hanging it on a peg or hook. Avoid plastic bags, as they can trap moisture and tangle the string.

What To Look For in a Bucket Hat?
Start by considering the hat's material. Bucket hats typically come in cotton, polyester, or canvas fabrics. Cotton is breathable and comfortable, while canvas is ideal for durability in outdoor settings. Polyester is lightweight and water-resistant, adding versatility.
Next, assess fit. Bucket hats should comfortably fit but not squeeze your head. Measure your head size beforehand to ensure the right fit!
Additionally, the hat's brim is crucial. Opt for broader brims for sun protection while ensuring stiffness to maintain shape; you don't want your hat drooping and obstructing your view!
Lastly, look for adjustable features like drawstrings or toggles for a customizable fit and easier storage in bags or pockets.
