View Full Version here: Cat Litter Absorbent Crystals.

While at Coles this morning, I noticed bags of "New" cat litter absorbent crystals labeled with silica gel contents. This product differs from the conventional clay or paper options typically used for cat waste.

The texture of these crystals resembles standard silica gel desiccants, with a color mix of clear and blue crystals that are similar in size and consistency to rock salt.

The price was reasonable; I believe it was about $5 for 2 kg. It's convenient to purchase, which is a significant factor for me.

I wonder if anyone has tried using it as a desiccant for scopes and EP boxes, etc.? I know there are cupboard and boat dehumidifier products available, but they often seem disposable, while this product appears to be reusable after heating.

Yes, I came across a recommendation for this material and bought a packet about 2 years ago! However, I never got around to opening it.

allan gould

It is indeed silica gel and functions the same as those with color indicators.

Remember, when the crystals turn pink, they are saturated with water.
Dry them out in the oven until they return to a nice blue. Store them in a dry, airtight container.

This method helps remove moisture in confined spaces, but it won't be effective unless you can seal the equipment. For instance, a small cloth bag stuffed in a sealed SCT will keep it dry.

It sounds great; however, if it contains a deodorizer, that could be disastrous for fine optics! Be cautious.

Terry B

I found that it smells worse when used in a litter tray compared to regular granules.

allan gould

Baking it several times for 1.5 hours at 180 degrees Celsius should eliminate any traces of "deodorizer."

Indicating silica gel is the best choice. Though expensive, it’s essential to know when the silicate is saturated. When it reaches saturation (usually pink), it releases moisture back into the environment, which can encourage fungus growth.

Where can one purchase those little silica gel bags? Anyone know?

JethroB76

Ebay or a camera store?

mldee

There are plenty of options on Ebay or through online yellow pages.

I'm planning to buy a bag of these cat litter crystals and test them in water to see if the blue turns pink, as mentioned earlier.

I will share the results.

Waxing_Gibbous

As I'm examining some now, I detect a faint floral scent.
There's also a slightly slimy, liquid residue at the bottom of the container.
I wouldn't recommend it near a telescope, but it might be okay in a litter tray at the bottom of your storage area.
I find that a combination of silica gel, baking soda, and standard kitty litter works well for most situations that don't require a dehumidifier.
If you're investing significantly in your equipment, why compromise on desiccant? :)

I've been using these (http://www.silicagel.com.au/products/Hydrosorbent-Silica-Gel-Dehumidifier-40-grams.html), which are rechargeable, with the price including shipping.

mldee

Regarding the comment "If you're investing in your gear, why skimp on desiccant?"

Thanks for the update, Peter; it doesn't sound promising. My main attraction to this product was the convenience of picking it up during my regular shopping at Coles instead of ordering online.

mldee

Thank you, Robin. Initially, I thought it was a US-based website and considered the shipping costs.

Upon closer examination (which I should have done first), I noticed it's located in the Gold Coast, and as you mentioned, the price includes shipping. This seems like a good solution, and I will order it online without hassle.

Just ensure your cat doesn’t find it!

While these crystals look convenient, the recommended 3 hours in an oven for reactivation seems absurd, especially since 40 grams of loose silica gel can be zapped in a microwave in just a few minutes.

Could these crystals also be microwaved?

gb.

mercedes_sl

Not to sound smart, but the aluminum case may pose a problem in the microwave. I'm not sure if it can be easily disassembled.

Andrew

Tandum

Truthfully, I've never had to reactivate one yet. :)
I've always kept them in a Pelican-style case with my cameras.
It seems tin and doesn’t look like it wants to come apart.

gb_astro

(There are numerous metal objects that are microwave-safe.
Just checking if this is one of them.)

Hi Robin.

In the typical humidity of Brisbane (where I see you are), silica gel will absorb the maximum amount of water it can within an hour. After that, it becomes ineffective unless reactivated.

The indicator spot on the can should change from blue to pink around the same time under similar conditions.
If you haven’t reactivated yours because the spot has never changed from blue to pink, it may indicate something is wrong with the indicator, and the crystals have long been saturated.

"-For everyone else, after some Googling, I found a Qld-based lab supplier (ProSciTech) that sells bulk silica gel, e.g., 500g for $12, 2kg for $29." -

Thank you for that effort, gb. As you noted, a bulk silica gel order should last quite a while.
It's interesting to note that the company is based in Townsville, a bit too far for me to drive from Brisbane for a direct pickup. :)

gb_astro

Hi Mike.
Just buy the 25kg drum for $280 and enjoy free shipping. :)

If you need silica gel, just let me know what it will cost to ship to you, and it’s a done deal!

GAME CHANGER!!

We switched about a month ago and could not be happier with the change. Crystal litter is just far superior to clay litter in my opinion!!

All the positive reviews for this product seem misleading. It used to be good, but they must have switched factories. It lasts about a week with one cat before it starts smelling like urine, requiring frequent changes. One bag lasts a maximum of 15 days. Ridiculous.

The crystals keep the box so dry until it’s time for a change.

I have purchased these crystals for five years; it’s the best. I don’t smell the urine until it’s time to change the litter.

The Best!

It’s the only litter my cats accept. When it’s out of stock, and I have to buy something else, I face numerous issues.

So Far So Good

I purchased a bag just yesterday (06/19/). It has only been one day, but so far, everything is going well. The only concern is my cat kicking the litter everywhere as she exits the box.

Great Product

I've been using this product for the last year, and I’m delighted with it. There are no odors or clumps, and I highly recommend it!

This product does not live up to its advertisement. I find it harder to control odors with crystals than with regular clay litter—urine soaks into the crystals, causing ammonia odors to be noticeable within days, unlike clay litter where both feces and urine can be removed. It can also be uncomfortable if your cat trails crystals throughout the house. A poor choice for multi-cat households.

Is this really worth it?

With two cats, we are searching for a new litter solution. Our longtime choice no longer controls urine smells effectively. We loved a popular silica cat litter but are seeking a cheaper alternative. The color-changing feature is unnecessary, as it indicated neither of our cats have health issues. I thought this would be a good replacement; however, we haven’t even had it for a week, and it’s already not covering the odor. Despite daily cleaning and following the directions, it fails to meet expectations. It’s messy too; the larger crystals result in more litter being tracked outside the box. We are heading to Walmart or Pet Smart to try something else today.
