Die Cutting Machines & Trimmers - Insights From My Crafting Journey

A die cutting machine paired with a quality trimmer is an essential tool for papercrafting enthusiasts. In this article, I will share my favorite choices. Although I still have my original BigShot die cutting machine, which I bought second-hand, I've tried several trimmers over the years!

Initially, I made the mistake of investing in a pricey trimmer only to discover more affordable yet precise alternatives that met my needs better. Other trimmers that failed to make consistent cuts have since been given away, but I still hold onto my first trimmer as a nostalgic keepsake.

Various Options for Die Cutting Machines

In New Zealand, die cutting machines are readily available, including electric models that eliminate the need for manual cranking and those capable of cutting multiple images without costly dies!

PRO TIP: Regardless of your machine, the cutting plates will inevitably get scratched. I prefer to cut exclusively on the bottom plate while leaving the second plate clear to maintain visibility as the top plate. When the bottom plate wears down, I switch it out for the old top plate, introducing a fresh top plate for cutting.

PRO TIP: Plates can warp over time. To prevent this, flip them regularly and utilize both sides, especially the cutting plate. When your cutting plate develops a curve, always cut into the valley rather than the hump. This approach has ensured that my plates stay relatively straight.

Let’s start with these three prominent representatives in the market:

  • Sizzix BigShot - a manual machine
  • Crafters Companion Gemini Junior - an electric machine
  • Brother Scan n Cut - an electronic machine

The Sizzix BigShot is currently one of my go-to tools. Mine is second-hand but very reliable, sturdy, and stable. You can also purchase various accessories such as precision base plates for intricate dies, magnetic plates to secure dies, and extra-long cutting plates.

Available for purchase from: Ribbon Rose, Spotlight

ALSO: Check out my blog post dedicated to the CHROME Precision Base Plate for the BigShot machine—it flawlessly cuts intricate dies, adding significant value to any craft room.

There's also the electric version known as the BigShot Express. I recently acquired this machine, and I absolutely love it (check out my blog post review for details)! Additionally, there's a smaller manual machine named the BigShot Foldaway and a larger version called the BigShot Plus.

While I haven't personally used the electric or electronic machines like the Gemini or Scan n Cut, here's what I've learned about them:

The Gemini is available in three sizes: Original, Junior, and Go. It operates similarly to manual machines, where you layer your plates, cardstock, and die, then feed the setup through. The difference is you simply press a button instead of turning a handle. Reviews often laud this machine for cutting intricate dies effortlessly. Unlike traditional models, you build your sandwich directly on your workspace and feed it into the slot.

The Brother Scan n Cut can scan your stamped images (up to an entire page of different designs) and accurately cut them out in no time. You can adjust the white border to be either thick or nonexistent. It also boasts a digital library for cutting shapes directly from its LED menu, with some machines designed to cut fabrics as well as cardstock.

Trimmers & Scissors

In my initial crafting years, I faced challenges with uneven cuts, paper shifting, and the frequent need to replace blades. There were times of colorful language at my crafting table! But eventually, I discovered some excellent tools.

The Tim Holtz Guillotine 8.5” x 6” has been a game changer for me. It fits perfectly on my craft table without taking up too much space. Not only is it portable and lightweight, but it also cuts cardstock smoothly, allowing me to achieve straight lines for my projects.

PRO TIP: It took me longer than it should have to notice the A5 marker on the ruler—definitely handy!

If you don't have a larger trimmer yet, I might not recommend this model as your first purchase. However, if you're looking for a compact solution to fit in budget-friendly storage or a craft bag, it could be a worthwhile addition.

The company is the world’s best Die Cutting Machine For Packaging supplier. We are your one-stop shop for all needs. Our staff are highly-specialized and will help you find the product you need.

For those seeking a larger option, I recommend the Tim Holtz Maxi Guillotine. It accommodates cardstock up to 12.25” tall, is slimline for easy storage, and has an extendable ruler arm hidden within. The handle can be removed and concealed in the base for portability.

Fiskars offers a robust selection of trimmers, scissors, and punches, typically available at craft stores like Spotlight (keep an eye out for coupons!).

Scissors

Finding the perfect scissors can be a bit challenging, especially being left-handed. Here are a couple of my top picks for scissors:

I really enjoy using the Fiskars snips, which accommodate both left and right-handed users. They feature a spring-action design, which makes precision cutting a breeze!

Tim Holtz's range of non-stick scissors includes various sizes. He is also rolling out left-handed products for us crafters, with updated design accents to enhance their aesthetic appeal.
