Quick test - pull the oil stick! Is the oil looking relatively fresh - amber, relatively clear in appearance? (good) Is it dark, nearly black, but still feels like oil? If the unit has an oil pressure guage, see what pressure you have at start, and see if it drops off after it gets hot. You might see a slight fall off, but more than that, I would be wary.
