Bamboo Material In Vietnam
Bamboo is a treelike grass (the Graminea) and is among the fastest-growing plants in the world. With over 1600 species, bamboo is commonly found in the tropical and subtropical regions of Asia, Africa, and Latin America.
Bamboo thrives throughout Vietnam, where over 60 species cover nearly 1.6 million hectares. Among these, Lung (Bambusa longissima sp.nov) and Luong (Dendrocalamus barbatus) are primarily harvested for use in crafts, furniture, and construction.

Outstanding Properties
The rapid growth of bamboo is astonishing, reaching heights of 15-20 meters in just three months. Bamboo is a renewable resource, with the ability to regrow without replanting and can mature in 3-5 years, at which point the stems solidify for use.
The structure of bamboo stems is cylindrical, sturdy, often hollow, and lightweight, boasting high bending and tensile strength. Mature bamboo stems have a flexible core and a tough, slightly shiny outer skin that provides protection and a rustic look.
Bamboo species vary in size, color, node, distribution, and mechanical properties. Even within the same species, stem size and quality can differ.
After harvest, bamboo stems are collected and moved to processing sites.
Application Areas
Bamboo’s versatility allows it to be processed mechanically in a myriad of ways, resulting in products for many industries, including construction, architecture, interior design, homewares, textiles, and paper. Here are some key applications of bamboo in Vietnam.
Construction & Architecture
Bamboo stems can be machine-cut to serve as beams or columns. By slicing lengthwise or heat-bending, bamboo sections enhance structural and decorative elements like banisters. Split bamboo strips undergo hot-pressing to become floorings, ceilings, beams, walls, and more.
Furniture & Homewares
Bamboo’s use in furniture is extensive, with strips that are hot-pressed to create outdoor furniture, board panels, kitchen trays, and desk organizers. Bamboo weaving techniques produce baskets, lampshades, planters, and other homewares. The coiling method converts bamboo slivers into decorative household items like bowls and trays.
