OT U-Haul Trailers

I moved my B&S mill using one of those double axle trailers.

Unfortunately the guy that was SUPPOSED TO DRIVE decided to tail load the trailer BECAUSE he THOUGHT it would be EASIER to get it out if it was further back. That made what SHOULD have been a rather EASY trip over 50 miles a SCARY event. I dunno if you've EVER driven a trailer that was tail loaded, but it's SCARY!!! MAKE SURE you get the load center of gravity FORWARD in the trailer so you have ENOUGH TOUNG WEIGHT to keep the back end straight. I ended up driving, and I will NEVER drive another tail loaded trailer AGAIN! OMG, it picks up the whole back end of te vehicle, and makes it SWAY a good 3' back and forth on EVERY bump! Dang Ford van was ALL OVER the road!!! That's also the FIRST and LAST time I listen to somebody about what I KNEW should have been done, but DIDN'T because they SAID it would be OK! I SHOULD have put my foot down and MADE them move that mill about 2' forward so it wouldn't have been tail loaded!!!! I DEFINETLY WOULD HAVE had the driver deceided he wasn't up to the task BEFORE 1/8 way through the journey! I think what happened is he freaked out when he realized how hard it was to control like that and wanted me to take responsibility if things got too hairy. I'll NEVER trust ANYBODY that says a tail loaded trailer is OK again!!! I don't have a lot of experience towing trailers, but I tell you what, driving tail loaded is NUTZ! The double axle U-Haul trailers AREN'T happy to have heavy machine tools placed dead center of the bed. We bent the trailer that hauled my mill, but we moved a 16"x8' hendey lathe with it too earlier. I'm not sure which machine bent it, but I KNOW the trailer sagged in the middle by the tail gate with the mill on it. I'd HIGHLY recommend that you put down some 2x10s or something to help distribute the weight under it, and provide some skids to slide it out on. That was my first (and only) experience moving machine tools, and it wasn't that bad all things considered. Noting bad happened, except the u-haul trailer got a little bent up, and the van wanted to intrude on the adjascent lanes REGARDLESS of how careful I was. Didn't hit anybody, didn't hurt the machine, and didn't break the tow vehicle. It officially put the SUCK in success!
