3 Steps Build A Realistic Dinosaur In 27 days

1.2 CAD drawing

CAD drawing

After hand drawing, Mr. Mao took the baton and start to the CAD part.
&#;Why should we make the CAD drawing&#;?
&#;Everything to get records, like the size and motor position. Engineers could follow this drawing to create the dinosaurs than by their experience. &#;
&#;For example, we could calculate it by this drawing if the dinosaur/animal over height.&#;
&#;Ok, I got it. It&#;s the &#;Map&#; of the dinosaur.&#;
&#;Aha, that&#;s totally right&#;

2.Structure

2.1 Build Skeleton

&#;Skeleton&#;

Paper will sleep shallow, never know the matter want to practice. The theory is over and practice begins. Let&#;s move to steel frame parts.
Engineers will follow the CAD drawing and build the structure. (Ummm, yes, you could imagine it&#;s the dinosaurs&#; skeleton.)
We should consider the stability and strength of the steel frame here.
There are two kinds of steel frame here, one is Galvanized steel frame and the other one is the standard one. Galvanized steel would be harder and stronger. The structure will not be deformed easily.

Steel frame = Skeleton

2.2 Electrical parts
2.2.1 System

Select the appropriate control system and driving system according to the effect.
Driving system: Electric, pneumatic and hydraulic.
Control System: PLC control and Microcontrollers
The regular one is the electric system with Microcontrollers.

2.2.2 Install the motors and Gear Reducer.
Each movement connects with one motor. Different power used in different locations. Such as 30W for eyes blinking, 250W motor and a reducer for the belly breath movements. So that&#;s why 1&#;2 meter dinosaur couldn&#;t get 6 or 7 movements. Limited space inside the body.
We have to choose the correct motor type for the dinosaur/animals.

3.Skin

Muscle + Skin + Coloring
The most interesting moment has come when it comes to the making of its skin. This is one of the most critical moments. I&#;m going to divide this into three steps.

3.1 Muscle

We&#;re going to build the muscles for the dinosaurs. Well, you can&#;t imagine what we use to make his muscles. Yeah, it&#;s a sponge. Why do we use sponges?

Shaping

First of all, sponges are light, easy to shape. At this point, we used the sponge to make its muscles. They are also two kinds of sponges here: flame retardant and the standard one. We can choose the appropriate type according to our needs.
Making the shape of an animal or a dinosaur by the sponge is a very complicated and careful job. They need 5&#;10 days to do these details.
Draw the shape on the sponge at first, and then use the knife or soldering iron to make the texture step by step. It is a big challenge of the skilled artist also.

I thought it&#;s quite easy at first. I picked up their tools to start cutting and texturing. But when I started working on it, I realized it was not a simple task. The wrong strength using will lead to the failure of my dinosaur/animal. It looks easy but it&#;s hard to do.

3.2 Skin

Animatronic Dinosaur

Sponges also have its flaw, poor ductility. It&#;s fine for the static dinosaur/animal, but a problem for the animatronic one. Hero on its way, stocking is here.
Stockings give sponges elasticity and ductility. It did a good job of isolation, avoid the silicone cover with the sponge.

Silicone rubber is a semi-organic synthetic compound. Silicone is weather and fire resistant and a great insulator. Silicone has low tensile abrasion and chemical resistance.
Three to five times silicone will cover on top and It looks like the real skin now.
The skin which can stand outdoor elements, sunproof, rainproof.
Well, brushing silicone is also a technical job. If the silicone brush too much, we can&#;t see the texture. But if the silicone brushes thin, it will easy to break. The right degree is more difficult to grasp. According to different parts, 3&#;5 layers is more appropriate.

3.3 Coloring

Painting

After all this talk, it&#;s finally the last part, coloring. A nice color will bring new vitality to the dinosaur/animal. Our average listing time for each dragon is about 5~10 days. Greatness takes time.
Bottom color, the first layer, the second layer to five layers. And our colleague also will use a small pen brush to deal with the details. I forgot to say, our dinosaur eyes are handmade also.
Tribute to the artist.

3.4 Special dealing

P.S. Well, there will be some special treatment for some small details. Like eyes and teeth, claws and tongue. For better effect, different materials will use here. Such as fiberglass, Acrylic and so on.

Fiberglass Claw

Well, in totally, 27 days, let&#;s witness the birth of a dinosaur/animal.

If you have more interest in the dinosaurs/animals, welcome to share your ideas with us. Thank you and hope my article will help you to know more about our industry.

Modern dinosaurs had tails like fiberglass | PDF

The ankylosaurus dinosaurs had club-like tails covered in complex armor that resembled fiberglass or Kevlar bulletproof vests, providing strong protection in all directions. A study of ankylosaur armor plates found they contained interwoven collagen fibers and bone in layered mats, creating great strength while remaining lightweight. This complex armor structure could withstand large stresses from tail swinging and protect against bites from T-rex.
