Bronze Sculpture Frequently Asked Questions
Here are some of the top bronze sculpture frequently asked questions.
Bronze Sculpture Maintenance
One of the best qualities of bronze is that it requires very minimal upkeep to keep it looking pristine. If you feel like you want to clear away any dust immediately, stick to using gentle soap and water and a soft cloth. Otherwise, you may protect the metal by waxing your statue once a year with a clear layer of wax.
What are Patinas on a Bronze Sculpture?
Patina refers to the outside color of a bronze sculpture. It is the direct result of a chemical interaction with the copper in the bronze that physically alters the color of the bronze's surface, and it can be natural, man-made, or both.
The Statue of Liberty is a well-known example of a patina. The gorgeous green hue is the product of air and moisture interacting with the copper in the bronze over many years.
Installation
You should anchor the sculpture to a sturdy foundation, such as a concrete slab, pad, or prefabricated metal or wooden base that can secure the sculpture's base. Look to drill holes large enough to fit bolts of at least 3/8" or attach mounting brackets to the base that you can then secure. A high-torque drill is your best bet to get this done quickly and easily. You can also look for color-matching patinas to complement the bolts with the base color.
Keep in mind that you should never mount a bronze sculpture directly onto a steel base. The reason being that the two dissimilar metals can eventually generate a chemical reaction called electrolysis that can slowly degrade the metals. You can, however, place a rubber, silicone or plastic buffer in between the two metals to ensure they don't make direct contact with each other.
